Accounts payable and accounts receivable are the plumbing of every business: money going out to vendors, money coming in from customers. The work is high-volume, process-driven, and entirely digital, which makes AP and AR two of the most reliably remote roles in accounting, and two of the most realistic entry points for people building an accounting career. What the two jobs actually involve
They are often listed together, but AP and AR are different jobs with different temperaments.
Accounts payable (AP): the money going out. An AP specialist receives vendor invoices, matches them against purchase orders and receiving records (the classic three-way match), codes them to the right expense accounts, routes them for approval, schedules payments, and keeps vendor records clean. The job rewards accuracy and skepticism: AP is where duplicate invoices, wrong amounts, and outright fraud attempts get caught or missed.
Accounts receivable (AR): the money coming in. An AR specialist generates customer invoices, applies incoming payments to the right accounts, monitors aging reports, and chases late payers. The collections side makes AR the more people-facing of the two: a good AR specialist writes firm, professional emails and makes awkward phone calls without burning customer relationships. AR performance is measurable in one number, days sales outstanding, and specialists who lower it get noticed.
Smaller companies combine both into one “AP/AR specialist” role. Larger companies split them and add layers: clerk, specialist, senior, then AP or AR manager.
What remote AP and AR work pays
Current realistic US ranges for remote roles:
- AP or AR clerk (entry): $18 to $24 per hour
- AP or AR specialist (2+ years): $22 to $30 per hour, roughly $45,000 to $60,000 salaried
- Senior specialist or team lead: $55,000 to $70,000
- AP or AR manager: $65,000 to $90,000 or more

The software that gets you screened in
AP and AR hiring is intensely tool-driven because the job is lived inside the tools. The names that matter:
- Core accounting platforms: QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite, Sage Intacct. Mid-size and larger employers lean NetSuite and Intacct; small businesses lean QuickBooks.
- AP automation: BILL (formerly Bill.com), Tipalti, Stampli, AvidXchange. Experience with any one of these is a strong differentiator because it signals you have worked in a modern AP workflow, not just manual entry.
- AR and billing: invoicing modules, payment processors like Stripe for e-commerce employers, and collections tools.
- Excel. Non-negotiable at every level: pivot tables, VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP, and comfort reconciling large exports.

Why AP/AR is a genuine career on-ramp

- Specialist to senior to manager within AP or AR, into genuine management pay.

What remote AP/AR interviews test
Expect practical screening: a scenario exercise (“this invoice does not match the PO, walk me through what you do”), questions about volumes you have handled (“how many invoices weekly?”), and process questions about approvals and controls. Quantify everything in your application: invoices processed per week, payment runs owned, DSO improvements, discrepancies caught. AP/AR is a numbers job; a resume without numbers reads as inexperience.
A warning specific to this field
AP and AR job titles are the most heavily impersonated in remote-work fraud, because the real job involves moving money. Scammers post fake “payment processing specialist” and “accounts receivable assistant” roles where the “work” is receiving funds into your own bank account and forwarding them.
