Remote Bookkeeping Jobs With No Experience: How to Break In
How to land your first remote bookkeeping job with no prior experience: free certifications, portfolio clients, realistic starting pay, and the employers most likely to hire beginners.
Bookkeeping is the most realistic entry point into remote accounting work. It does not require a degree, the core skills can be learned in weeks, and demand is constant: every small business in the country needs its books kept, and most of them outsource it. Here is the honest path from zero experience to a paid remote bookkeeping role.
What bookkeepers actually do
Before investing time, know what the job is. A remote bookkeeper typically handles:
- Categorizing transactions in QuickBooks Online or Xero
- Reconciling bank and credit card accounts monthly
- Managing accounts payable (bills) and accounts receivable (invoices)
- Running payroll or supporting a payroll provider
- Producing basic monthly reports: profit and loss, balance sheet
It is detail work with clear right answers. If you are organized, comfortable with numbers, and reliable, you can do this job. If you hate repetitive precision, pick a different lane.
Step 1: Learn the software, not just the theory
Employers hiring beginners screen for one thing above all: can you operate the software today? Two moves cover it:
QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification. Intuit’s certification is free, self-paced, and takes most people 15 to 25 hours. It is the single highest-return credential for entry-level bookkeeping because recruiters keyword-search it. When you finish, it goes at the top of your resume, not the bottom.
Xero Advisor certification. Also free, also fast. Xero is the second most common platform, especially with firms serving international clients. Having both certifications makes you flexible. Since QuickBooks appears in the majority of listings, our QuickBooks remote jobs guide goes deeper on the specific QBO skills employers pay for.
Round it out with basic bookkeeping theory: debits and credits, the accounting equation, accrual versus cash basis. Free courses cover this in a weekend. For a comparison of every credential worth considering, see our certifications guide.
Step 2: Manufacture experience before anyone hires you
“No experience” is fixable in about a month:
- Do the books for someone you know. A relative’s side business, a friend’s Etsy shop, a local nonprofit. One real set of books, kept clean for two months, is legitimate experience you can describe in interviews.
- Build a sample company file. QuickBooks Online offers a test drive company. Practice a full monthly cycle: enter transactions, reconcile, produce reports. You can walk an interviewer through this.
- Volunteer treasurer roles. Community groups, clubs, and churches constantly need someone to track money. It is unpaid, but it is a reference plus real ledgers.
On your resume, these are not hobbies. Write them as work: “Maintained complete books for a retail sole proprietorship: transaction categorization, monthly bank reconciliation, quarterly reporting.”
Step 3: Target the employers that actually hire beginners
Not every company will take a first-timer. These segments do:
- Outsourced bookkeeping firms. Companies that do bookkeeping as a service hire in volume, train new staff on their own processes, and are structurally remote. This is the highest-probability first job.
- Bookkeeping franchises and agencies. Similar model, often contract-to-hire, which lowers their risk on an unproven candidate.
- Small businesses hiring directly. Higher variance: some want experience, but many just want someone trustworthy who knows QuickBooks. Your manufactured experience matters most here.
- Seasonal tax firm support. January through April, tax firms hire remote support staff for data entry and client document management. It is a proven side door into year-round work.

What you will earn at the start
Realistic 2026 numbers for US remote bookkeeping:
- First role, no experience: $18 to $24 per hour, or roughly $38,000 to $48,000 full time
- After 1 to 2 years: $24 to $32 per hour, $50,000 to $62,000
- Senior or full-charge bookkeeper: $60,000 to $75,000
Freelance bookkeepers with their own clients charge $30 to $60 per hour but must find those clients themselves. Most people should take an employed role first, learn on someone else’s processes, then decide whether to go independent. Full ranges for every accounting role are in our salary guide.
The interview: what beginners get asked
Expect practical screens, not trick questions: categorize this transaction, what would you do if the bank reconciliation is off by $50, walk me through invoicing a client. Interviewers are testing carefulness and honesty more than speed. “I would check X, then Y, and if I still could not find it I would flag it rather than force it to balance” is a winning answer shape. More examples in our interview questions guide.
Red flags for entry-level candidates
Beginners are the main target for bookkeeping scams. Never accept a role that involves receiving money into your personal account, purchasing equipment with a check they send you, or paying for mandatory training. Legitimate employers pay you, train you free, and run payments through business accounts.
