Interim Senior Director / Controller (Remote)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Interim Senior Director / Controller to provide accounting leadership for a large, complex, multi‑location services organization. This high‑impact interim role will oversee financial operations for the company's largest business segment, ensuring accurate financial reporting, effective close processes, strong internal controls, and exceptional partnership with operational and sales leadership.

The ideal candidate is a hands‑on accounting leader who thrives in fast‑paced, transformation‑oriented environments and can quickly assume ownership of critical accounting processes. This individual will lead a remote team, collaborate with executive leadership, and provide strategic and operational support during a period of organizational change and growth.

This engagement is expected to last 3‑6 months and may offer longer‑term opportunities for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all accounting and financial reporting activities for the organization's largest operating business unit.
  • Manage and oversee the monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Direct the preparation, review, and analysis of branch‑level and business unit profit and loss statements across a large, geographically dispersed operation.
  • Oversee balance sheet reconciliations, account analyses, accruals, and other critical accounting functions.
  • Manage accounting for incentive compensation programs, including sales commissions, management bonuses, and other variable compensation structures.
  • Partner closely with sales and operational leadership to provide financial insights, resolve compensation‑related inquiries, and support business decision‑making.
  • Lead workers' compensation accounting, reserve analyses, and related financial reporting activities.
  • Oversee bad debt analysis, allowance calculations, and other revenue‑related accounting processes.
  • Monitor compliance with internal controls and identify opportunities for process improvements and operational efficiencies.
  • Review financial results, identify trends and variances, and communicate findings to executive leadership.
  • Support ongoing finance transformation initiatives, process standardization efforts, and system optimization projects.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on accounting, reporting, and operational finance matters.
  • Drive accountability and performance across the accounting function while fostering a culture of responsiveness, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals, including multiple direct reports.
  • Provide clear direction, coaching, and performance management to ensure team effectiveness.
  • Establish priorities and allocate resources to support critical business objectives.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional leaders across finance, operations, sales, and executive management.
  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and deliver a high level of customer service to business partners.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 12 years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
  • Experience serving as a Controller, Senior Director of Accounting, VP of Accounting, or comparable leadership role.
  • Experience supporting large, multi‑location organizations with complex P&L structures.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, month‑end close, account reconciliations, and internal controls.
  • Proven experience overseeing incentive compensation, commission accounting, and sales‑supporting finance functions.
  • Demonstrated success managing large teams and leading through organizational change.
  • Advanced financial analysis, problem‑solving, and decision‑making capabilities.
  • Hands‑on approach with the ability to execute both strategic and tactical responsibilities.
  • Strong executive presence and ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership.
  • Available to start immediately and commit to a 3‑6 month interim engagement.

Preferred

  • CPA designation.
  • Experience within professional services, business services, or other high‑volume service‑based industries.
  • Background working in private equity‑backed organizations.
  • Experience supporting acquisition integration activities and rapidly evolving businesses.
  • Exposure to large‑scale operational environments with multi‑location level profit centers.
  • Experience leading finance transformation, process improvement, or organizational redesign initiatives.

Systems Experience

Candidates should possess strong systems aptitude and a proven ability to work independently within accounting and reporting platforms.

  • ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle or similar platforms.
  • Financial reporting and planning solutions.
  • Account reconciliation and close management tools such as BlackLine.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial modeling capabilities.
  • Experience improving processes within legacy or non‑modernized technology environments.

Location and Placement Details

  • Remote position or hybrid in Atlanta.
  • Candidates should be located in the Eastern or Central time zones.
  • Travel or periodic in‑person collaboration (to Atlanta) will be requested based on business needs.
  • Interim engagement anticipated to last 3‑6 months.
  • Immediate start strongly preferred.
  • Competitive market‑rate compensation targeted at $100‑$125 an hour.

The compensation for this role is estimated to be in the range of $100 – $125 per hour, and may include discretionary bonuses or other benefits as required.
